Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Integrated Care for Pediatric Treatment of Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Has your child been diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter Disease? If so, they could greatly benefit from physical therapy.

At Fitness for Health, our physical therapists are well equipped to treat this common condition typically found in young boys and girls, primarily those who are athletes. There is a natural progression of this condition, as it affects children who are experiencing growth spurts. Due to the progressive nature, our aim is to provide treatment before the condition becomes severe, in order to alleviate pain and promote healing.

Our team is highly trained to treat this condition.  Since Osgood-Schlatter’s affects the area where the patellar tendon attaches to the tibia, our treatment plan will focus on the areas surrounding the knee, in order to relieve pain, decrease inflammation, and improve functional ability in the affected area.

Evidence supporting the success of therapy treatments for Osgood-Schlatter’s

A clinical study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy highlights the efficacy of physical therapy for treating Osgood-Schlatter’s in young athletes. Titled “Clinical Presentation of Osgood-Schlatter Disease in the Adolescent Population,” this study follows the treatments of 75 patients over a 4-year period. Of the patients involved, 57 were male, aged 11-20 years, and 18 were female, aged 10-18 years. 73% of patients were involved in athletic activities.

The Duration of Symptoms chart revealed that the majority of patients (20) had been experiencing symptoms for 2-6 months prior to treatment, with relief being found after participating in their physical therapy treatments. Only 3 patients posed extreme cases, with symptoms being felt for greater than 5 years.

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of physical therapy treatment on Osgood-Schlatter Disease and the importance of prescribing treatments before symptoms become severe. The more progressive the condition gets, the harder it is to provide full corrective treatment.
